TELLURIDE - Tee off for winter on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Telluride Ski and Golf’s charity tournament, Swing for POW. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit global nonprofit Protect Our Winters (POW). Founded on the idea that the collective power of the winter sports community is massive, and if everyone works together the end result can be revolutionary, POW focuses on educational initiatives, advocacy and the support of community-based projects. Participation in the tournament will include a party, Calcutta, and auction the evening before at Tomboy Tavern.

Protect Our Winters’ mission is to engage and mobilize the winter sports community to lead the fight against climate change. Climate change is a term that refers to major changes in temperature, rainfall, snow, or wind patterns lasting for decades or longer. Both human-made and natural factors contribute to climate change. The last decade has been the hottest on record.  Each of the last three decades has been much warmer than the decade before, with each one setting a new and significant record for the highest global temperature, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

According to POW, snow-based recreation in the U.S. contributes an estimated $67 billion annually to the U.S. economy and supports more than 600,000 jobs. Of all the US states with winter tourism economies, Colorado has the most to lose from inconsistent winters, with almost 40,000 jobs and $1.2 billion in salaries at stake. Colorado led the nation with almost 12 million skier visits per year. The 8 percent difference in Colorado skier visits in lower snowfall compared to higher snowfall years equals $154 million in lost revenue and 1,900 fewer jobs statewide. By 2100, under a higher-emissions scenario, Rocky Mountain mean snow depth in winter is expected to drop to zero.

“Telluride Ski and Golf recognizes the potential hazards of climate change to our local businesses,” states Heidi Lauterbach, Sponsorship and Mountain Events Manager, “We are proud to support Protect Our Winters, to be part of a strong force working to save our favorite wintertime sports, and to help ensure future of our winter economy.”

Registration includes 18 holes of golf + cart, two complimentary drinks, snacks, and a gift bag as well as the party, Calcutta, and auction at Tomboy Tavern on Aug. 22. Auction items include a Telluride Season Pass, Wagner Custom Skis, Zeal Optics sunglasses + goggles, Osprey Packs, and others. At Tomboy Tavern tournament participants can mix and mingle with some of POW’s Athletes and representatives.
