WEST POINT, N.Y. – Cadet James E. Link III (Jake), son of Jim and Katie Link of Ouray, and brother of Patrick and Abbie, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on May 28.
Jake graduated from Ouray High School in 2010, and graduates with honors in the top 10 percent of his class at West Point with a degree in Human Geography. While at West Point, he was selected as a Key Summer Leader and served as the Commander for the West Point Summer Leader Experience.
Jake also served as the Brigade Physical Development Officer, and as G Company, Third Regiment Commander. He conducted extensive water studies in Uganda, working with local political and environmental leaders to research and develop potential strategies. Jake will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Infantry branch, and will report on June 16, 2014, to Fort Benning, Georgia to attend Ranger School, followed by Infantry Officer Basic Leader Course, Airborne School and Stryker Leader Course. He will then join the 2nd Stryker Calvary Regiment in Vilseck, Germany.
The U.S. Military Academy is a four-year co-educational federal undergraduate liberal arts college located 50 miles north of New York City. Founded in 1802 as America’s first college of engineering, it consistently ranks as one of the top colleges in the nation. A pre-eminent leader development institution, its mission remains constant – to educate, train and inspire cadets for careers of professional service to the Army and the nation. Upon graduation after four years of academics and military training all cadets are commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants in the United States Army and serve for a minimum of five years of active duty service.
