More often than not I disagree with Seth Cagin on issues involving local development, but he hit the nail on the head when it comes to the recent Ajax Hotel thumbs-down by the Town Council.
How to describe the council’s inexplicable decision? Arrogant, short-sighted, thoughtless…daft, deranged, idiotic.
I could go on and on forever, but you get the picture. A new hotel, to go with the science center still (hopefully) in the works, would electrify the east end of town. It’s a really exciting prospect… unless, of course, you’re a fanatical NIMBY who wants to turn Telluride into a lifeless ghost-town without people. As most everyone knows, I’m a hardcore advocate of Open Space and Historic Preservation; but if we have empty tracts of land here and there within the town limits, for god’s sake let’s use them to build vibrant businesses and institutions, not more blocks of high-priced condominiums that will sit empty most of the year. That would be just plain crazy.
